COURSE DESCRIPTION

ACLS is a practical, simulated case-based course that will enhance resuscitation skills in the management of cardiac arrest and peri-arrest patients. Ideal performance is initially demonstrated via video and Instructor. Learning is facilitated by extensive hands-on practice, with each participant getting several opportunities to lead their team in simulated clinical scenarios, guided by positive and constructive feedback.

COURSE CONTENT

The course includes both theoretical and practical components:

• Basic life support skills, including effective chest compressions, use of a bag-mask device, and use of an AED
• Recognition and early management of respiratory and cardiac arrest
• Recognition and early management of peri-arrest conditions such as symptomatic bradycardia
• Airway management
• Related pharmacology
• Management of ACS and stroke
• Effective communication as a member and leader of a resuscitation team

LEARNING RESOURCES

• An ACLS Provider Student Manual is provided to each participant for review before, during and after the course.

TESTING AND CERTIFICATION

• For successful completion of the course, participants will be expected to obtain a score of at least 84% in the written evaluation and demonstrate practical proficiency.
• On successful completion of this course, HPCSA registered participants will be issued 30 CPD points: (28regular CEUs + 2 Ethics), an ACLS provider certificate.
• Discovery members will earn 1000 Discovery Vitality miles.
• This course is valid for 2 years.
